Season Almanac

About Season Almanac

Season Almanac answers one question quickly: is this fruit or vegetable in season yet? The checker on the home page, In Season Yet, gives a yes or no for the current month and shows the full season at a glance.

How to read the dates

The dates are a general guide to typical harvest months across the United States. They are not specific to your state. Seasons start earlier in warm regions and later in cool ones, often by several weeks, and weather shifts them from year to year.

"In season" means the crop is normally being harvested in the United States that month. "At its best" marks the middle of the season, when supply is highest. Stores sell most produce all year using imports and storage, so you may see items outside these months.

What's covered

60 fruits and vegetables so far. Regional seasons are planned.

Picking and storage tips are general kitchen guidance. Storage times are approximate and depend on how fresh the produce was when you bought it.

Sources

Dates were cross-checked against the USDA SNAP-Ed Seasonal Produce Guide, the Penn State Extension harvest calendar and the New York State harvest chart. Items those sources do not cover use general growing knowledge.
